Fish Comic

This was my first attempt at a comic, to celebrate the dvd release of Ponyo. 

I've been waiting patiently since summer to watch the movie again, but I got home today and found that one of my older ryukins (a type of goldfish), was pretty brutally beat up by the other fish. She's in a separate tank right now, but her fins are pretty damaged and she doesn't look too good... I'm still excited about Ponyo, but not really in the mood to watch a movie about fish right now...

Pepper

I ordered Chinese food today and didn't even get a fortune cookie. I think they tried to make up for it by giving us more duck sauce than anyone could reasonably use. I'm much more disappointed about this than I should be.

How Doth the Croc

Text by Lewis Carroll - it is "How Doth the Little Crocodile", and if you are not familiar with it, you should be! [link]

We had a project in illustration class where we had to chose a page from a children's book an illustrate the text on that page. I instantly knew that I wanted to do a poem by Lewis Carroll, because they are so much fun! (And also public domain, which is always a plus.)

The lines were painted with India Ink, then scanned and colored in photoshop.

Library Poster

This was a project for my illustration class. We had to create a travel poster for a place we went over the summer, and, well... I didn't go anywhere except for work, so I made a poster for my place of employment!
It's definitely not perfect, but I learned a lot from working on this. I'll also have full-sized posters printed out soon, which is kind of exciting. Hopefully, the colors will print well.

Swan Sketch

I had a bit of free time in illustration class today while waiting for some tech help. Instead of doing nothing, I threw this together. About five minutes in photoshop.

Waves

Speeeeed paint! I'm really starting to appreciate how relaxing it is to give myself 10-20 minutes in photoshop to fiddle around. I don't have a whole lot of time to do large or detailed works while I am in school, so this sort of thing gives me my "fix".

Grace

Practice.

Grace was the working title (I had to save it as SOMETHING, and I have so many doodles named "girl 1" "girl 2" that it gets very confusing). She was originally in a ball gown and had a very long, graceful neck and very fancy hair piled on top of her head, and the name Grace was very fitting. Then she turned into a girl in a t-shirt with a pony-tail. Then she turned into Disney's Belle. Then she turned into this. Since I can never think of titles, this is still called Grace.

DA Portfolio

DeviantArt is now hosting artist portfolios, which is awesome, because I can't afford to host my own web page right now. The layout is pretty simple, but I think simple can be good. Anyway, I didn't have any picture that would really make a good front page banner, so I put this together. It was good practice, but hopefully I will come up with something more polished soon.

Speedy Mouse

I drew this a few weeks ago, when I didn't have a lot of time to dedicate to art. Everything is very simple, so I figured it would make an easy-to-follow step-by-step piece... This was done in Photoshop CS3. Everything is in its own layer, which might seem like a lot of work, but allows you to be lazy later on...























Rough sketch. This was done in its own layer on top of a white background layer. I used the hard-edged round paintbrush tool in gray at about 70% opacity.
























Lines. I set the hard-edged round brush to have shape dynamics. I made a new layer on top of the rough sketch and traced with the regular round brush in black at 100% opacity. When I finished, I made the sketch layer invisible.

























Rough colors. Basically, I threw a bunch of colors all over the place, like a three-year-old. It's messy, but everything is in it's own layer (background, mouse's feet and tail, mouse's body), so I can erase the mess later.

























Final. (Hey, I told you it was a speedily-done pic...) I blended the colors by using the eyedropper tool and painting at an opacity of about %4o on top of other colors, and then using the eyedropper tool to use the newly blended colors. I fiddled around with mixing the colors until I was happy with them. I also used the soft round brush at a low opacity (about 15%) in pink to add blush to the mouse's ears and face. Now the "everything has its own layer" bit comes in. Since each colored section is separate from the others, you can just go in and erase anything outside of the lines in each layer.
